Tour of Spain - Vuelta a Espana

On Saturday the tour of Spain starts. Check out the official web page for the top information

http://www.lavuelta.com/11pr/en/recorrido/vuelta.html

Starts in Benidorm, heads south to the Sierra Nevada, across to Cordoba, along the border of Spain/Portugal, across to Salamanca, into the north-western part of Spain, and across northern Spain to Bilbao before heading to Madrid at the end.
They cycle about 2000 miles over 23 days (only 2 days not cycling).........that's pure endurance.

I cheer on Team Sky
http://www.teamsky.com/
and or Mark Cavendish (Isle of Man) http://www.markcavendish.co.uk/ from HTC high road. He is the best sprinter on a bike in the world. He does approx 100miles THEN sprints to the end!!!

Looking forward to this new event (in my brain).......although it's been going for about 66 years
I just never knew :-)

Didn't succeed :-(

Today I'd planned to bike to Colchester and back........I managed to bike to Colchester (that isn't much of a challenge now), but not back.

I decided that I would bike there, go and see Mr Smith then bike home. I went to the Priory centre first to help Juliet, and didn't leave till about 12pm (due to sitting and having tea/chat). I went along the A137 http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/61922596 as that is the easiest route TO Colchester. I find it good as I can pace myself, and know exactly where I am in relation to reaching my target.
First mark point is the house I left my motorbike when I got a puncture (not too far from Ipswich)
Second mark point is Manningtree railway
Third mark point is the big strawberry at Foxash (where I sometimes took Rob Swan to football)
Fourth mark point is Ardleigh
Then I'm at Colchester :-)
I then had to cycle the other end of Colchester to see Mr Smith (past the train station). It was 2pm by the time I got there. We was sat catching up on all the gossip/news, and we were talking for longer than I'd originally planned. By 4:40pm I decided I couldn't ride home for 2 reasons. Firstly that I wouldn't get home till late and secondly I couldn't be bothered. So I got the train back. Plus the thought of cycling past the train station then cycling home..........couldn't work out the logic ;-)
Once I got back to Ipswich I had to bike from the station to home, didn't make it up Lansdeer Hill without stopping.

I'm now feeling tired zzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzz plus Colchester United are losing which is making me fall asleep.

The tour de Espana starts on Saturday which I'm going to try and watch. Never knew there was a Tour de Espana until I've started following the professional cycling calender. Come on Team Sky, or Mark Cavendish (HTC highroad) for the sprints.

Seen some nice bikes advertised on facebook today

They are from the

Should anyone want to buy me one, feel free :-)

Back on it............

Ok, so I haven't been on here for nearly a month :-( because I haven't been doing a lot of riding. A mixture of reasons: weather, being too busy looking after garden, and being away on holiday.

While Vince was away from the 9th July I was responsible for looking after the garden. It wasn't a simple job of just watering. It involved watering, weeding, pruning, spraying, cropping (blanching and freezing)..........took a good 1 1/2 hours each day, so didn't have time for any big rides. I may have biked to work a couple of times but nothing major.
The 2nd week the weather was terrible. It was raining most days, which I didn't mind too much as it saved time with the gardening, but it really wasn't cycling weather (unless you're in the Tour de France). This is the first year I've ever watched the TDF and I must say I was impressed........they are the professionals!!! http://www.letour.fr/2011/TDF/COURSE/us/le_parcours.html
Vince came back on Thursday 21st, however I then went away on the 23rd. I did think about taking my bike with me to Cheltenham (music school) but then reality kicked in and decided that I wouldn't have time, or the inclination to do any biking while I was there.
I have set myself a new challenge for next year though, I want to try and get up Leckie Hill (Leckhampton Hill).
http://www.cheltenham4u.co.uk/leckhampton_hill.asp?area=Leckhampton%2C+Bath+Road
for those around the area, or who have been up it know how much of a challenge that will be.

I returned from holiday on Saturday 30th July, and knew that I needed to get back on my bike (after eating like I had for the past week). I coudn't bike to the army Sunday morning as I had to take my instrument(S) back. I did bike in the evening though which felt good.

I then got back on the bike to cycle to work on Monday. Tuesday I biked to the Priory centre (such a long distance!!!!!! 0.7miles) Wednesday had to take my car to the garage so I put my bike in the car and cycled from the garage to work. At 8:30pm it decided to chuck it down, mixed with bit of thunder, so a colleague (very kind one) offered to put my bike in her car and give me a lift home :-)
When I arrived home Wednesday night I had a big parcel waiting for me :-) my mum had sent me some waterproof trousers, a cycle helmet and some new boots (courtesy of a famous postal delivery service.......better not advertise it). I was quite surprise the cycle helmet looked ok. The boots were brilliant and the trousers were.......a little on the large size but still ok.
I had to bike to the hostel thursday morning as my car was still in the garage. The problem was that it was slightly raining which meant I got to check out the waterproof trousers. They did the job, even if I do need to adjust them. I collected my car at lunchtime so put the bike in the back of the car again.

So today I decided I needed to get back to some bigger rides. It was looking rather cloudy so I just popped over to Felixstowe and back (20mile round trip) via Aldi's on the way back to get some shopping. I was back in time for the kick-off to the new season :-) and what a start 4-2 win away from home COME ON THE U's!!!

I hope to bike to the hall tomorrow, subject to the weather :-)

Even with only little bit through the week still clocked up about 35 miles this week :-)

It's good to be back :-)

Saturday 9 July 2011

Increase in distance :-)

Today I decided to go for a bike ride as I was left home alone. My husband has gone on holiday with his son, so I thought I could go for a longer bike ride as I don't have to be home by a certain time. I had done some planned routes around the Wattisham area. The original plan was a 35 miles round trip. However I ended up doing aroun 37-38 miles.
My little computer said 38miles however Mapmyride said it was 36 miles, so I'm saying it was 37miles.

The stats according to my little computer:

Distance:           38:11
Time:                 3h:26m:40s
Max Speed:       31.4mph
Average Speed: 11mph

When I got home I could feel it in my knees/legs. Also my face feels a bit burnt, I need to learn to put on suncream before I go out.

It gave me a chance to wear my new jacket that Vince bought me :-) it was a little bit too hot really and I did take it off half way round. It is a very nice hi-vis, waterproof, cycling jacket and I am very pleased with it.

Not sure how I'm going to feel in the morning as I think I may have pushed myself today. I think it is good to keep pushing on, but think it might start to feel sore soon.

This is the route I took:
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/40713448

that's all for now, feeling bit sleepy.......................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sunday 3 July 2011

Biked to Colchester AGAIN :-)

Mission 2 done again. I biked from Ipswich to Colchester, however this time I went a different way. Also I went at a different time of day. When I did the mission last time I left early morning, whereas this time I went after work. Yes note that, after a days work (8-5......well finished at 4). I think it helped going later in the day as my muscled had got warmed up. Also I went along the A137 this time, whereas last time I went across country "south suffolk cycle route".
I thought to myself "it took 3 hours last time, I want to get it down to 2 1/2 hours"

Well, I did it in 1 hour 38 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was surprised how quick I did it. It was only 5 miles shorter along the A137, but it is a much better surface as it is a fairly main road. Not too main that it is dangerous. Another advantage of this route is that I know the road very well (unlike the country route) and it is just one road all the way there. The other good advantage of this route was that there was quite a few down hills and not so many up hills. I'm not sure I'd want to come back that way because it would be more up hills.

The official stats (according to my little computer)
distance:             20.03miles
max speed:         31.7mph    (speedy gonzales)
average speed:   12.2mph
Time:                 1h:38m:24s

Certainly beats stats for the last time. However, my effort seems very little in comparison to Steve Hanovers. The reason I biked to Colchester this time was because they were having a bbq/music evening to raise money for "Life of Linda" charity 900 mile cycle and tenor horn ride. See website

http://www.lifeoflynda.com/Life_of_Lynda/Welcome.html

I hold my hands up to the bloke, he (and the team) done brilliant. It is coming to a climax as I type, with a final concert in London tonight. They started in Inverness, Scotland and have biked 900miles down to London, doing various concerts along the way. They are hoping to raise £50,000 for 2 charities.
It makes me think about increasing my challenge..........but I think I'll stick to the Paris one for starters.

Having constantly updating my record of cycle rides, I have totalled about 157 miles for the whole of June

http://www.mapmyride.com/workouts/?

and over 200 miles since I have been keeping record :-)

I could feel the pain of the cycling on my arms tonight (you use your arms as well when cycling, especially up hill) when I was trying to play the piano. My "extensor carpi radialis" on my right arm was killing me, but they say no pain no gain ;-)

I am trying to work out my next long distance ride. Mission 3 was to go to Norwich by the end of July......not sure if that'll happen by end of July, definitly will do in August, but think July would be pushing it. Looking at a 35-40mile ride next (Norwich is 50+)

Watch for an update..................

Wednesday 29 June 2011

did I beat my previous time???

YES!!!

Yesterdays stats were:
distance:            3.6miles
max speed:        24.3mph
average speed:  10.2mph
TIME:               21m.12s

:-) :-) :-)

I think it helped that it was looking very cloudy and about to pelt it down with rain (which it did 3mins after getting in)

Today, I beat yesterdays time as well :-) :-) :-)

Stats for today:
distance:            3.6miles
max speed:        24.2mph
average speed:  10.4mph
TIME:               20m.48s

not too sure if I'll beat that though as todays conditions were perfect, little bit cloudy, not too warm but not too cold. Also thinking about yesterdays time, I just remembered my chain came off on the hill, so 30seconds were spent putting the chain back on.

Question is, do I try and bike to Colchester again Friday evening????

Monday 27 June 2011

Can I beat 22 mintues 37 secs?

Ok, today I biked to work (Care home job). Which is about 3.5 miles, but involves Lansdeer Road (hill). When I left at 7am I was surprised how warm it was. I managed to bike in just t-shirt and jeggings, no jumper. I thought at that point "it's gonna be a hot day"........

Well I was right............IT HAS BEEN A SCORCHER :-) shouldn't complain too much though :-)

However, when it came to hometime (2:30pm nearly the hottest part of the day) I had to bike home. To start with the ride gave a nice breeze, and going down the first hill was even better. Then, I had to go up Lansdeer Road :-( The sun was beaming down on me :-( trying to bike up the hill. I did make it, just was sweating by the end of it.

I checked on my computer to see how long it took to get home and it read
Ride time:           22m:37s
Average speed:    9.5mph
Distance:             3.5miles
Max Speed:         21.9mph

Not bad stats considering the heat!!!

Tomorrow's mini challenge is to beat that time (coming home) :-)

Will update tomorrow

Tuesday 21 June 2011

Mission 2 completed :-) :-)

After being told off on Sunday for not writing on here lately, I thought I'd better do something. The main reason for not writing was because I hadn't done much cycling, since last weekends epic 41miles over 2 days.
I did bike to work 3 times (once to the care home, and twice to the lifehouse aka hostel). I'm normally a fair weather cyclist, however I got bit caught out cycling home Friday afternoon. It was clear in the morning, so I biked, then it started raining throughout the day. About 4:30pm my hubby rang to see if I wanted picking up, but at that point it wasn't raining much so I said I'd be ok. Well.........not long after setting off, it pelted it down!!!!! and I got a 'little' bit wet :-(

I had a busy weekend, so didn't to do much cycling over the weekend, and lost a bit of momentum/motivation for it. The telling off I got ;-) mixed with the kick up the backside on Monday, I decided I would do as planned in my mind and cycle to Colchester.

This morning when I woke up it was looking rather cloudy and windy. However, after discussions with hubby and checking out route/weather I decided I'd give it a go.

I decided on the route the Colchester United fans took when they did it
http://www.cycle-route.com/routes/Ipswich_to_Colchester_via_Raydon-Cycle-Route-3157.html
slightly editted from my house, and arriving at the Salvation Army (Colchester)

The first part seemed to take forever and due to quite a few open fields the wind was quite strong. Apparently it was 'suppose' to be a relatively flat route, which to be honest possibly was looking back. It didn't feel like it whilst doing it. Once I got nearer Colchester it was ok, until the killer hill right at the end (Balkerne Hill), didn't make it up without stopping.
Did feel a sense of acheivement on reaching the hall. Not sure the people at the hall believed me to start with, but then they saw the bike and realised I was telling the truth :-)

There was no way I was biking back, this time, so I biked to the train station and got the train back to Ipswich. I will do both ways eventually, but one way is a big enough acheivement for now.

Plus having looked at the amount of miles I've biked this month so far:
http://www.mapmyride.com/workouts/
I've done about 126.8miles. which I think is pretty good (averages out 6 miles a day).

I shall keep going........... :-)

Saturday 11 June 2011

The past week

I haven't updated this blog for a week, I know, but that doesn't mean I haven't been out on my bike. On the contrary. With the new website I found last week, the total miles I've biked this week is 45.82miles. :-)

25miles was acheived today :-) on another of my random bike rides. The rest have been commutes to and from work and the army.
I will also add that I have made it up lansdeer road hill most the times since last week (once I didn't as I was carrying a bag on handlebars).
I am pleased that I have managed to get up the hill most times, that is an acheivement in itself.

To check out the ride I did today, see Mapmyride
http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/49850506/
The average speed drop quite a bit towards the end :-/ it had been 11mph-12mph, not 9mph but I may have over stretched myself.
I am on course for my 3 challenges. Still got 19 days to do Colchester, and doing 25miles today is the distance to Colchester, just need to do it twice in a day (as need to get home)

I am hopefully going to take part in the Ipswich Skyride tomorrow (assuming I can move). I will have to bike to army first then go and take part after. This is the first time it has been in Ipswich so should be fun :-)

Anyway that's the latest :-)

Thursday 2 June 2011

NEWS FLASH!!!!

I made it up Lansdeer Road hill :-)

I biked to work today, after biking to town yesterday, and on the way back I managed to get up the hill. I hadn't planned on going all the way up it, but got so far and thought "I'm half way, may as well try and go the rest" and I did.
I'm not promising I'll make it next time, but I'm pleased I did it this time.

Also found new website that I can map out my routes easier, and it tells me how many miles etc.....
I only started it yesterday but done 13.38 miles this week :-) so far

http://www.mapmyride.com/workouts/

Things are looking good :-)

New webpage found

I've found a new webpage I can mark out my trips, and it works out the distances :-) and adds them all up :-)

Recovered :-)

Ok, so on Thursday I felt the pain. I was knackered........my legs felt like they had sandbags attached to them. I drove to work that night, however still got my exercise as someone decided to run off site and me being me (and nearly the youngest) ended up running after them. (100m sprint then 100m jog.......where was my bike when I needed it).

However I think I am recovered. Had busy weekend with a house full (eldest son, his girlfriend, his mate and their dog, the daughter and her dog), but I am going to bike tonight......determined to keep going.

Want to do Colchester by the end of next month :-)

Wednesday 25 May 2011

Being good :-)

Going to be good and bike to work again tonight, may regret it in the morning but hey ho :-)

the morning after........

I feel surprisingly OK, had warm bath (not too hot as got sun burnt) which helped ease the muscles.
I really should bike to work tonight, but we'll have to wait and see how I feel at 8pm. It's not so much the biking to work, like I've said before, it's the biking home after an 11 hour night shift and up the hills.

Going to check out routes to Colchester soon.......

Tuesday 24 May 2011

Bike ride to Felixstowe

I did it!

Felt quite easy on the way. 10 mile in 50 mins, better than I'd thought. It was a very flat route which also helped. Part of the cycle route goes along next to the A14 (the worse road in the uk), which was quite scary riding towards lorries, but it was only for about 1 mile :-)
I left home earlier than I needed, just to make sure I'd got time to enjoy the ride. When I decided to leave it was quite windy so I thought I'd wear full length trousers (thin ones)......but 10 mins down the road I regretted it. Fortunately they were combat type so I could undo the legs a bit and roll them up :-) I got to Fx just before 11am and went straight to the town centre and hunted out some cheap shorts......the factory shop did the business :-)
Then rode down to the seafront and sat looking out to sea, made couple of phone calls, and soaked in the rays (forgetting that I'd not put on suncream). At 12:30pm went round to a friends house (Suzanne from Ipswich Army) for the afternoon.
Had very enjoyable afternoon with Suz, Merv (her hubby) and chap called Ali (tree cutter - Suzanne's neice's hubby). Sat in the garden, soaking more sun, eating bacon sarnies :-)
Then walked to fet Lucy (their daughter) from school, before setting off home.

Biking home was bit more hard work. I had head wind on the way home, however only took 10 mins more,  but could begin to feel the muscles in my knees :-/

Now I've sat down I'm beginning to feel all kinds of muscles.......and can see I've caught the sun (got a mark where I had wore a head band ;-0 lol) an my arms look browner.

So, first mission is accomplished, biking to Fx before the end of May :-) now next challenge is Colchester (that involves hills) may extend the challenge frame though...................

Lets see how I feel in the morning :-)..................

I'm off

Ok, so I'm off to Fx now :-).....................

off to Felixstowe?

Ok, so I've woke up this morning thinking "ouch"

My muscles are aching from yesterday.........and I'm planning on biking to Fx?????
"It's not that far" (thought for myself).....plus sorted out 3 course lunch when I get there ;-) (sandwich, crisps and biscuit)

The other slight concern is it appears to be windy still :-/ hopefully it'll calm down in the next 2 hours.

Links didn't work

Don't try clicking on the links in 1st post as they didn't work :-/

Start of bike-blog

Today I decided that I would start a bike blog.

I'm not good at sticking to these sort of things, and I don't believe in telling everyone, everything about my day/life............so thought I'd just do a cycling one. It should be a good motivator to keep going with the cycling.

I need a challenge!!! I often do challenges (London to Southend bike ride 2003/Gorilla fun run 2009) and I'm feeling the need to do another one. I want to do London to Paris, and was really looking at doing it in Sept 2011, however VB (Vincent my husband) has persuaded me to put it off till next year, to give me time to train.

I am really trying to use my bike more. I have been cycling to the Salvation Army (2.7miles each way = 5.4miles round trip) on a tuesday night since transferring and I'm also trying to bike on a thursday night.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Last night I biked to work which is 3.7miles there (but with couple of hills.......which are killers on the way back), did an 11 hour shift over night then biked home. Unfortunately there was a head wind coming home, up the hills. I made it up the 1st one, but not all the way up the 2nd one (Landseer Road) without walking some of the way.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Tomorrow I am planning on biking to Felixstowe (9.4 miles each way) and I hope this wind calms down. I have checked the weather and it is suppose to be better. Also got my cuppa sorted when I get to Felixstowe :-)
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

I've tried to put links in to the routes I take, but not sure if they work :-/

But that's it for the first update, watch this space for more.................
